FREE Advertising: Traffic Exchanges This intro will help if you are new to traffic exchanges. If you already know the basics, just skip down to the vendors, below. There are a few different kinds of traffic exchanges, and they are all easy to use. To keep it simple, we'll first separate traffic exchanges into "No HTML" and "HTML Required" exchanges. Then, within these categories we'll explain your options. No HTML Required If you don't control the design of the websites you promote you can still use traffic exchanges, and you have a few options. You can send traffic directly to your company's website in exchange for viewing the websites of other exchange members. Or, you can exchange displays of your banner ads for viewing the banner ads of other exchange members. Either way, it's free advertising, as long as you are willing to view the pages or banners of others while you're at your computer anyway. Even within website traffic exchanges you have some options. There are startpage exchanges and surf-for-credit exchanges. They are similar, but not quite identical. With startpage exchanges you set your browser's "home" page to the exchange site. Every time you open your browser you'll see another member's site, and you'll earn credits to have your site displayed. With surf-for-credit exchanges you visit the exchange site and click through the other member sites, earning credits with every new page you see. To get the most exposure you need to join more than one exchange, so you can reach more people. So you will need a way to set your "home" page to different sites, or have a way to open multiple browsers. There are specialized browser products, made specifically for this purpose. Once again, you're trading time for advertising. If that works for you, then the "No HTML" exchange solution is for you. HTML Required Once you run your own website, you may not want to spend time visiting other people's sites for free exposure. It's a lot easier to copy-and-paste a little HTML into your own site, and let your site visitors crank-up your exchange points for you! In this case, you're looking for banner exchanges, and web-rings. The exchange or ring will provide some HTML code for you to add to your site. It will display a banner ad, or a link to another site in the web-ring. To find out more about web rings, test the web ring links near the bottom of every page in this site. With the banner exchanges, you typically earn one banner exposure for every two exposures on your site -- but different exchanges may have different rates. With web-rings, there really isn't any exchange rate. A web-ring usually includes websites with a common theme, or with related content. You're hoping that someone who visits another site like yours will use the ring, and find your site that way.
