Links to Your Site

Links to your website are one key to your success. Links from search engines, and from other related websites, are how people find out about your website. Your online business cannot succeed without incoming links.

And links beget links. Of course, you can submit your website to search engines, asking them to index your pages. But your ranking in those search engines will depend, to a large extent, on the other sites they index that link to yours. And it's not just about quantity -- it's about quality. In fact, it's mostly about quality. What makes the best quality links?

A website that links to yours should be somehow related to yours. Generally, that means their content is similar to yours, and they point to you as another "expert" in the field. The most valuable links are one-way links from related websites. The search engines give these the highest value.

Unfortunately, getting one-way links is mostly outside of your control -- your site just has to be good enough for someone else to recommend. But if you believe it is good enough, you can always ask another webmaster to link to your site. There's no harm in asking. Or, use an idea we'll show you in detail, below.

Almost as valuable are two-way, or reciprocal links between related sites. The best way to get a reciprocal link is to start by putting a one-way link to their website on yours, and then send a kind request to the webmaster for a reciprocal link. Let them know you respect their work, and often you will be rewarded with their respect (and a link) in return.

Further down the quality ladder are links in your forum posting signatures, or ones that are clearly advertising your website, or give the impression that the linking site will get paid for sending you the traffic.

Almost any link to your website is worth something, but flooding the web with links in low quality sites (like FFAs, for example) will do almost nothing for your search engine ranking (and it may hurt you in some cases). A single one-way link from a high quality site is worth much more than lots of low quality links, so don't spend extra effort on them.

Now let's look at some resources to get quality links pointing to your website

Getting One-Way Links

The bottom line for getting a one-way link is: your site has to be useful to someone. Over time, as people find your site and learn how good it is, some of them will link to you. You can help this process by making it easy for them. Set up a "link to us" page that has HTML they can copy-and-paste. Here's an example (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

There's a trick to getting the < and > on your page without the browser thinking it's a tag. You cannot just type < or > in your page's source. Instead, use < to display a <, and use > to display a >.

More One-Way Links: Web Directories

Good News: There is no need to wait for the natural links to develop on their own, you can submit your site to web directories that will link to you. Many web directories are free, but they'll take their time listing your site. Of course, you can always pay to get your site on the fast-track. And some web directories work strictly for pay.

It's impossible to submit to all of them, so here are a few guidelines to picking your directories:

 • Look for niche directories that specialize in topics relevant to your website.
 • Make sure the directory has good statistics, including a high page rank, low Alexa ranking, and high numbers of links from other sites.
 • Visit the directory's site. Check out the design quality. Hover over the links and make sure they go directly to the page they're listing (not to some javascript).

For lists of web directories, check out our Recommended Resources page.

Link-Swap

You can get people to visit your site by adding a link box, like the one below. It shows ads with links to other sites. In return, folks with the link box on their site will be showing an ad for your site.

NOTE: The links to you on other sites will not help bring up your search engine rank, because it's all inside javascript, and the links are funneled through TrafficSwarm. But it can help bring more traffic to your site, if your text ad is catchy.

If this idea works for you, then click this link for TrafficSwarm and sign up for a free account.
